This year Dance Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ) is delighted to be a host organisation for the Pasifika internship programme, an initiative funded by Creative New Zealand and administered by the Tautai Trust. The programme aims to develop future Pacific arts managers and leaders, support Pacific arts infrastructure and establish pathways for emerging Pacific practitioners to build their arts management skills.

The chosen intern is Ufitia "Tia" Sagapolutele, an Auckland based dancer and choreographer. We look forward to welcoming Tia to the DANZ whānau and supporting her to learn new skills.

The paid internship runs for 20 weeks and will start on 5 March.

Artist Statement
Malo lava, o lo’u igoa o Ufitia (Tia) Sagapolutele. I am 23 years old, Samoan, born and bred in Aukilani, Niu Sila. Inspired by my parents and family members who are creatives, I have always been passionate in performing arts. As a creative artist, I have been able to perform siva, choreograph and direct my own work. Now, I would like to learn skills that would require me to be behind the scenes.

I am interested in interning at DANZ and believe they are the right organisation for me because they are the national service organisation for dance – which is my first passion.

Their purpose as an organisation is to provide service and leadership for dance in New Zealand. Their programme of services and support to the dance sector and opportunities within their professional development programme to upskill me in the areas of  production, event management, marketing, project management, and business development will help me to achieve my vision of helping other Pasifika creatives and develop platforms to share their work and inspire others.

About Tautai Trust
Tautai was formed in the 1980s, when Samoan artist Fatu Feu'u and a group of friends came together with the shared aim of supporting the small group of then emerging artists and promoting Pacific visual arts. Since then, Tautai has supported the growing number of Pacific artists working across a range of art forms. They offer artists opportunities to come together through a range of activities, including mentoring, professional development, exhibition projects, workshops and social gatherings. In this way, Tautai not only helps Pacific artists to grow and succeed in their chosen contemporary art form, but also in their lives and as individuals making positive contributions to their wider communities.
