Royal Tai

Tai grew up beside his beloved Lake Okareka in Rotorua, this turangawaewae imbues every aspect of him.
He secured a place in the first contemporary intake at the New Zealand School of Dance in 1982, which had just changed from the National Ballet School. Under the directorship of Ann Rowse this signalled a radical yet timely shift for the school and for the development of contemporary dance in New Zealand.
His first gig was with Impulse Dance Theatre in 1982 where he suffered concussion but kept moving regardless.
