Parris Goebel to Launch NZ Dance Week

New Zealand Dance Week 2017, 22-30 April

Global dance superstar Parris Goebel will launch NZ Dance Week 2017 at 2pm Saturday 22 April in Aotea Square, in Auckland.

The award-winning New Zealand-born choreographer, dancer, director and founder of world-champion hip hop crews ReQuest and The Royal Family says she’s excited to be part of the event launch, which celebrates dance all throughout New Zealand.

“Dance keeps us moving, and lets us create and express ourselves in celebrating life,” says Goebel.

The launch will include performances on Auckland Live’s Dance-O-Mat, the coolest interactive outdoor dance floor that’s free for everyone to use.  A huge success in Canterbury, where it brought public spaces back to life in post-quake Christchurch, the Dance-O-Mat is the ultimate get-down-and-boogie interactive experience.

Movers and shakers will delight in the professional-standard sprung dance floor that comes alive when a personal music device is plugged in and loudspeakers, lights and a glitter ball switch on.

Auckland Live director, Robbie Macrae, says, “we can’t wait to see Kiwis big and small shaking it on the mat, and are excited to be part of NZ Dance Week 2017. Dance – no matter where it is - is an essential ingredient in the mix of good health, culture and social well-being. And it’s fun!”

New Zealand Dance Week (NZDW) is an annual event organised by Dance Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ), to elevate the presence of dance in New Zealand.

DANZ board chairman, Jonathan Baker says, the aim of this event is to get New Zealand dancing and to highlight the value and joy the art form can bring our society. This is an opportunity to celebrate the talents of our local dancers and choreographers, and for our communities to be introduced and engaged in the beautiful world of dance.”

This year’s programme includes events throughout the country involving everyone from students to professional dance companies, tots to teenagers, and seniors. Hip-hop, belly dancing, swing, ballet and contemporary dance will all feature in diverse spaces – parks, on screens, radio, art galleries, in studios and on stages.

“Try and see something new, give dance a go. The more people involved creates more momentum, so one day in the future we can have all of New Zealand dancing together,” says Jonathan Baker.

Dance Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ) is the national service organisation for dance, providing services and programmes to promote vibrant and thriving dance in New Zealand. DANZ estimates that more than 630,000 New Zealanders of all backgrounds, abilities and ages dance regularly, which is more than play netball and rugby combined (SPARC 2007/08 Active New Zealand Survey).

Of the 20 most popular sport and recreation activities participated in over 12 months for all adults, Dance features at No. 8 on the list at 9.8% with an estimated 324,000 people participating [1]. This is almost twice as many adults participating in Netball and three times the number adults participating in Rugby.

Dance is also an excellent way to contribute towards Sport NZ’s Physical Literacy approach taking a holistic view of the participant and considers their physical, social and emotional; cognitive and spiritual needs. Dance creates an opportunity for people all ages to engage in a level of physical activity that impacts on the participants’ physical and mental well-being.
