After 15 years in the making, Auckland’s Q theatre will finally open its doors in September this year. Newly appointed director Carla Theunissen says Q will be complementary to the theatres already established in the city. “Q was dreamed up because there was a real need for it,” she says.

The aim of the theatre is to reach out to as many people in the community as possible.

She says it will host a wide variety of performing arts alongside theatre and dance. “I’d like to involve other events that are based on broader things like technological industries, architecture, food and wine.” The venue has two different performance areas, a 450 seat auditorium and a 120 seat one. There will also be rehearsal studios, a cafe and a bar.

The idea for the theatre originated from a dream shared by Auckland performers who wanted a place to put on their own shows. This dream developed over a decade with the help from members on the theatre’s board and funds from Q’s foundation partner, the Auckland City Council.
