Creative New Zealand’s 2014 Dance Review Report
By Cath Cardiff
Creative New Zealand is proud to be a major funder of the creation, presentation and touring of high-quality dance by Aotearoa’s lively and diverse range of artists and practitioners.
During 2013, we conducted a major review of how we support New Zealand dance. This is part of our regular review of all artforms; a way of “taking the pulse’’ of the sector to ensure we are best responding to New Zealand’s changing arts environment.
The final Dance Review Report identified the following key issues for dance in New Zealand:
- The need to increase audiences for contemporary dance
- The need for more suitable venues for both rehearsal and performances
- The value of having a domestic touring agency
- The need to increase for support for individual artists
We wanted to ensure the sector was closely involved in the review process. With input from the sector, the report has enabled us to identify and work on some of the current challenges and opportunities for dance in New Zealand. We also acknowledge the proactive work by DANZ to develop an ongoing dance industry strategy.
