Artists and performers announced for Rough Mix New Zealand programme

Developed by Scottish theatre company Magnetic North, the renowned artist development programme is coming to New Zealand for the first time with the support of Creative New Zealand. The artists and performers were selected by Magnetic North and Playmarket NZ.

Rough Mix is a two-week practical opportunity for artists to try out new ideas or new ways of working which will take place at the Basement Theatre 28 May – 8 June.

The selected artists are: Julia Croft (performance), Carl Bland (theatre/visual art), Morna Young (theatre/music), Sophie Bannan (visual arts/multidisciplinary), Sacha Copland (dance), Andrew Gunn (theatre) and Xavier Breed (dance).

The selected performers are: Anya Tate-Manning (theatre), Jag Popham (dance), Clare Marcie (theatre), Tui Hofmann (dance), Rosie Tapsell (dance/performance) and Ryan Dulieu (theatre).

Rough Mix brings together a small core group of experienced artists from different disciplines and gives them time to start developing new projects in a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. The experienced artists work with a group of performers and two early-career artists over a two week period, before making a work-in-progress showing at the end.

There have been eight editions of Rough Mix to date, leading to a wide range of new work. Previous participants have included playwrights, composers, choreographers and visual artists. Rough Mix New Zealand will be the first time this renowned artist development programme has taken place outside Scotland.

New Zealand/Scotland Playwright Residency

Rough Mix NZ will take place alongside the New Zealand/Scotland Playwright Residency and Exchange programme; a collaboration with Magnetic North, Playwrights’ Studio Scotland and Playmarket New Zealand.

Playwright, theatre-maker, actor and musician Morna Young has been selected for the second year of this international exchange between the two countries. Funded jointly by Creative Scotland and Creative New Zealand, the residency is the reciprocal stage of a playwright exchange between Scotland and New Zealand.

Morna will be hosted in Wellington as a Playwright-in-Residence by BATS Theatre and Toi Pōneke Arts Centre. The companies will commission a full-length play from Morna and accommodate her for 12 weeks to write in their organisations.

During the residency, Morna will also take part in Rough Mix as well as a one-week writing residency at Strathean Retreat in Te Horo with Playmarket New Zealand.

The exchange builds on a hugely successful pilot in 2016, where New Zealand playwright Arthur Meek was Writer-in-Residence with Magnetic North. The resulting play, Erewhon, was subsequently co-produced by Magnetic North and Christchurch Festival in 2017.
