SPRING EXPERIENCE: New Zealand School of Dance returns to Whirinaki Whare Taonga

The New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) returns to Whirinaki Whare Taonga this September with SPRING EXPERIENCE, presenting an exciting programme of classical ballet and contemporary dance performed by all NZSD full-time students.

Featuring four classical ballet works and four contemporary works, the programme showcases the breadth of training at NZSD, from the technical precision and artistry of ballet to the creativity and individuality of contemporary dance. Audiences will also experience three world premieres, bringing fresh and original choreography to the stage.

NZSD Director Garry Trinder says the annual Whirinaki season provides an important opportunity for students to develop their performance experience and connect with audiences beyond the School’s Wellington home.

“SPRING EXPERIENCE brings together the extraordinary commitment of our students with a diverse programme that celebrates both the richness of the classical repertoire and the innovation of contemporary dance. With three world premieres alongside established works, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

For NZSD’s pre-professional dancers, performing regularly is an essential part of their development, allowing them to put their intensive training into practice and build confidence as artists. Having the entire student body performing also creates a unique opportunity to see the breadth of talent developing within the School.

Whirinaki Whare Taonga is a valued cultural hub for the Upper Hutt community, and NZSD is delighted to once again share the energy, discipline and creativity of its young dancers with local audiences.

SPRING EXPERIENCE takes place at Whirinaki Whare Taonga, 836 Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt, from 24–26 September 2026.
