Performing Arts Tour Recipients Announced

The Asia New Zealand Foundation is pleased to announce the names of the three contemporary dance professionals the Foundation is supporting to visit Singapore and Malaysia in August.

The three recipients will attend the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) and Malaysia’s George Town Festival. They are Adam Hayward, Carol Brown and Melanie Hamilton.

Adam Hayward

Hayward completed a Masters degree in performance studies then worked for the Centre for Performance Research in Wales for five years. In 2001 he moved to New Zealand where he has spent the last fourteen years organising, among other things, a highly successful annual dance and performance festival, The Body Festival.

Hayward has created a number of dance projects in Christchurch including Dancing Like the Stars, a dance project for low decile schools, and high school dance based mentoring project Dance Ambassadors.

He is currently developing a space in Christchurch that he hopes will foster links between New Zealand dancers and those in Asia.

Melanie Hamilton

Hamilton is producer and dramaturg at dance company Muscle Mouth. The company’s first major work, AGE, was commissioned and presented by the 2014 New Zealand Festival, and their second work Triumphs and Other Alternatives premieres in April 2015.

Melanie has been a freelance producer for over ten years, successfully touring new dance and theatre shows across New Zealand and to Australia, the U.K and Europe.

Most recently she produced the 2015 Capital E National Arts Festival, which specialises in creating performance experiences for young people. While on Asia New Zealand's performing arts tour to Malaysia and Singapore, Melanie seeks to strengthen her producing networks in Asia and build upon Muscle Mouth’s professional links in Korea and Hong Kong.

Carol Brown

Brown is a choreographer, an Associate Professor in Dance Studies at the University of Auckland and director of Choreographic Research Aotearoa.

Brown gained an MA in Dance Studies from the University of Surrey. After completing a practice-led PhD with the solo The Anatomy of Reason, she was invited to become Choreographer in Residence at the prestigious Place Theatre London.
