The Growth of Arts and Dance Festivals

Arts festivals have become a growing phenomenon in the cultural agenda of Aotearoa with a huge impact on both the professional arts industry and the diverse communities that make up this nation.

The most well known multi-arts festival is the New Zealand Festival (once known as the International Festival of Arts), which is held in Wellington in even years. It is the oldest and longest running multi-arts festival in this country. 
Auckland Arts Festival is very much its junior in age with a late start in 2003 and it runs in alternate, uneven years, but is anticipating going annual from 2016.

Rebellious fringe festivals have sprung up, again the longest running being the NZ Fringe Festival in Wellington. Dunedin also has its Fringe. However, Auckland’s Fringe was ironically instigated by the Festival itself along with The Edge! The philosophy of fringe is very much an all-comers self-funded collection of events rather than a curated approach.
