Danza MIA is part of MIA- Mujeres In Aotearoa, a group of Latin American women in Wellington, who join to preserve and spread our culture, and to share our experiences as migrants and refugees. Led by Rosa Altamirano, Danza MIA started in 2013 to enable Latin American women to get together to learn and perform traditional Latin American dances. With twenty countries, Latin America has great regional diversity, offering a lot to learn. To preserve the traditional characteristic of our Latin-American folk dances, all choreography and costumes are made as close as possible to the traditional way. Preparation for the MIA Latin Festival is our focus every year, with extending our repertoire of dances. We also have performed at a number of cultural events organised by community groups and diplomatic representations in Wellington.

We always welcome new participants interested in expressing their culture through dancing, and sharing their cultural heritage with the Latino and the wider communities in New Zealand. The only requirement is to be Latin American or Spanish because the classes are taught in Spanish to preserve the oral tradition. There are two classes per month held at Toi Poneke Arts Centre (61-69 Abel Smith, Wellington) from 11:30am-1:30pm. TO JOIN DANZA MIA OR FOR INVITATIONS TO PERFORM IN EVENTS PLEASE CONTACT US!
