Louise Potiki-Bryant - Choreographer/Dancer/Visual Artist, Harriet Friedlander Residency (2014)
The Arts Foundation of New Zealand has announced Louise Potiki-Bryant as the recipient of the 2014 Harriet Friedlander Residency.
Harriet Friedlander was a committed advocate of contemporary art and personally planned the character of this innovative residency. The award provides $80,000 to support artists to research and network in New York which was Harriet's favourite international city.
Louise Potiki-Bryant is one of New Zealand's most exciting choreographers and is the first dance person to receive this Award.
Louise has recently returned from the Caroline Plummer Fellowship in Community Dance at the University of Otago and has been widely praised for her work with Atamira Dance Company, with whom she has created five works. Three of these works are the award-winning NGAI TAHU 32, TE AROHA ME TE MAMAE, and TAONGA; Dust Water Wind which was awarded ‘Best Production' ‘Best Music' and ‘Best Scenography' at the Tempo Dance Festival in 2010.
She has choreographed works for companies such as Black Grace Dance Company, and in 2014 she is choreographing a new work; IN TRANSIT for The The New Zealand Dance Company. She has also made collaborative works with many artists including clay artist Paerau Corneal, taonga puoro authority Dr Richard Nunns, composer Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal, video artist Rachael Rakena, and electronic musician Paddy Free, who is also her husband.
