Fresh on the heels of their sell-out Matariki season of Te Manawa in 2017, Hawaiki TŪ returns to the ASB Waterfront Theatre with their brand new Haka Theatre work Koha: the Gift of the Great Lands for three performances only 7-8 July.  Featuring a brand-new cast of multi-talented performers and several musicians, the work tells the story of Tane and his prowess in overcoming multiple challenges from the noble warriors connected to the seven prominent maunga (mountains) in Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland.

Tane - a whāngai (a child raised by the stars) discovers his supernatural gifts when the only person he truly cares for is taken from him.

Koha: the Gift of the Great Lands is a story of hope, love and passion that is grounded in its celebration of Matariki and the great lands of Aotearoa.

What the critics said about Te Manawa:

Vivian Arthur Aue – Theatreview, 12 June 2017
Extensively sharing quality Haka Theatre through ihi, wehi and wana to the world, Hawaiki Tu is in leadership to shape and mould the future of Maori performing arts in Aotearoa.

Dione Joseph – New Zealand Herald, 13 June 2017
Full credit to Beez Ngarino Watt and Kura Te Waati for creating a space where these stories reflect the multiple layers of his and her story but also creativity, experimentation and reflection. It was the perfect start to Matariki.

Merenia Gray – DANZ Quarterly, 12 June 2017
The heartbeat – manawa of the work is the choreography, some of the best fusion of contemporary and traditional Māori dance I have seen to date……. My choreographic highlight was the celebration dance prior to the tragic reveal of the plot due to puhaehae - jealously of a loved one.
