A cine-dance music production, Where Memories Sleep explores the imagined Antarctic legend of Aurora. Created by Jason O’Hara and Warren Maxwell, it’s the result of a 2016 trip to Scott Base where the pair captured a wealth of images and sound recordings from the ice.

Blending musician Warren Maxwell’s soundscapes with designer, photographer and video artist, Jason O’Hara’s images, Where Memories Sleep is an immersive, multimedia installation that uses storytelling to connect New Zealanders with the scientific world of Antarctica.

The highpoint of this exhibition's programme will be 5 special performances with a cast of actual dancers that will bring this amazing immersive cine-dance experience to life.

Featuring five of Wellington’s best contemporary dancers, Zaniah Fae, Joesph Tunupopo, Trent Omeri, Montell Nickel and Connor Ooshcon Masseurs (who has also choreographed the work), the performances portray the imagined legend of the Aurora in Antarctica. Each dancer performs multiple roles within the legend accompanied by Maxwell’s original score inspired by his recordings on the ice. The dancers’ costumes are designed by Jason with Sue Prescott, and the stunning make-up is by Alana James.

Both O’Hara and Maxwell teach at Massey University College of Creative Arts and they share a passion for encouraging and mentoring young people. This ethos can be seen in the outstanding young dancers and production creatives they have included in their team to bring their vision to life.

Performed at Space Place in 2019. This new, scaled-up production has been created specifically for Pātaka. There will only be 30 tickets available for each of the 4 performances.
