Working in Dance

DANZ assists people considering a career in dance by providing industry and career advice for dance students or assisting established dance people to sustain or grow their career within the industry.

The Dance Industry has three sectors:

  • Professional - dance companies and studios, professional dancers, choreographers, dance teachers.
  • Education - dance in the education system (primary, secondary and tertiary)
  • Participation - people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds participating in the wide genre of dance for health, well-being, recreation, cultural and creative expression

There are important relationships between these three sectors in areas such as audience development, training, skill development and nurturing talent. The education and participation sectors nurture early dance/arts experience including the establishment of values and attitudes. There are many cross sector work opportunities that enable a full and lifelong career in the Dance Industry. Through these three sectors, dance has a major role to play in NZ's health, identity, culture, artistic expression and economic development.

Many of our successful dancers are multi-skilled and work in different areas of the industry. The following are resources to help you on your way to a career in dance.
